इंग्रजी काव्य : भाग-५-अ :
शेक्सपियरचे ‘To be or not to be’ हें वाक्य प्रसिद्धच आहे ; तसेंच, ज्यूलियस सीझर नाटकामधील, ‘You too Brutus ; then fall Ceasar’ हें वाक्यही तितकेंच प्रसिद्ध आहे. अशी, मृत्यूच्या प्रत्यक्षाप्रत्यक्ष उल्लेखाची इंग्रजी नव्याजुन्या साहित्यातील बरीच उदाहरणें उद्धृत करतां येतील.

लॉर्ड टेनिसन याच्या ‘charge of the Light Brigade’ यातील या प्रत्ययकारी ओळी पहा –
Theirs not to make reply
Theirs not to reason why
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
–
टेनिसनच्या अन्य एका कवितेतील या परिणामकारक ओळी पहा –
Home they brought her warrior dead
She nor swooned, nor uttered cry
All her maidens, watching, said,
‘She must weep or she will die.’
–
एडगर अॅलन पो :
The boundaries which divide
Life and Death are at best
Shadowy and vague.
Who shall say where the
one ends and where the
other begins ?

Shameful Death
He did not die in ther night,
He did not die in the day,
But in the morning twilight
His spirit pass’d away,
When neither sun nor moon was bright,
And the trees were merely grey.
- William Morris
–
A Last Word
… Twine our torn hands ! O pray the earth unfold
Our life-stick hearts and turn them into dust.
